September 29, 2015–The United States Department of Education has awarded Success Academy Charter Schools, the largest and highest-performing charter network in New York City, a $13,4 million grant to replicate and expand its award-winning schools. This highly competitive grant will allow Success Academy to open 13 new public charter schools and expand its High School of the Liberal Arts, providing even more high-quality education options in a city where thousands of children, especially children of color, are trapped in failing schools.

Success Academy is perhaps the most well known charter school organization in New York City.  Founded in 2006 by Eva Moskowitz, a former college professor and New York City Councilwoman, Success Academy currently operates 32 schools in New York City, ten of which are in Brooklyn, and has plans to expand further. Recent run-ins with the Department of Education and the De Blasio administration however have slowed this expansion, including a denial of space at Andries Hudde School in Midwood last year.
