My Morning at Success Academy Harlem East

Spent some time a few days ago observing teachers at Success Academy Harlem East.  I was there because their results are consistently off the charts so I was interested to observe and potentially learn a little something.  I also wanted to go because there’s maybe a bit of skepticism out there in some quarters about Success’ work. People ask, Is it real or is it some kind of test prep gaming? I’d never been and was excited to have a chance to see what it was like there. My sense from an admittedly short visit is: “Yes, it’s real.”

Open Letter to Mayor de Blasio from Success Academy Parents
Originally published: 12.17.2014

Dear Mayor de Blasio,

We are parents at Success Academy Cobble Hill and Success Academy Williamsburg. Our children wake up every morning and can’t wait to go to school. They are getting a great education, learning math, science, reading, chess, music and art. They are learning how to focus, how to concentrate, how to learn. They are learning respect for their classmates, their teachers and themselves. Our children are on the road to success.

Upon his re-election in 2006, then-New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Joel Klein offered the free use of underutilized school facilities to a bumper crop of charter schools opening that year—including my first. Fueled by this policy, charter-school enrollment in the city grew from 11.000 to almost 70.000 by the end of Mr. Bloomberg’s second term in 2013, and my one school grew to 22.

The news is filled with stories about how charter schools — especially Eva Moskowitz’s big, bad Success Academy network — don’t serve students with special needs. As a parent of one such child, let me tell you: This is bunk.
