Stopping the Bus: The Power of Not Moving On

Stopping is the most powerful way to let your constituencies know what you really do and do not value, what you really will and will not tolerate. When a teacher stops a lesson dead in its tracks, it’s a big deal. When a principal stops the school day dead in its tracks, it’s a big deal. Everyone takes note.

Can’t argue with Success

Eva Moskowitz’s plans to expand her Success Academy over the next decade to 100 charter schools — including 12 high schools — gives the city a good opportunity to build on some, well . . . success.

My Morning at Success Academy Harlem East

Spent some time a few days ago observing teachers at Success Academy Harlem East.  I was there because their results are consistently off the charts so I was interested to observe and potentially learn a little something.  I also wanted to go because there’s maybe a bit of skepticism out there in some quarters about Success’ work. People ask, Is it real or is it some kind of test prep gaming? I’d never been and was excited to have a chance to see what it was like there. My sense from an admittedly short visit is: “Yes, it’s real.”

Originally published: 12.17.2014

Dear Mayor de Blasio,

We are parents at Success Academy Cobble Hill and Success Academy Williamsburg. Our children wake up every morning and can’t wait to go to school. They are getting a great education, learning math, science, reading, chess, music and art. They are learning how to focus, how to concentrate, how to learn. They are learning respect for their classmates, their teachers and themselves. Our children are on the road to success.
